Oil paintings on canvas need to be stretched on to wooden stretcher bars before they can be framed in a suitable frame.
One of the latest trends is for oil paintings of a suitable style( sufficient spare canvas around the edges ) to be stretched on to deep bars and displayed on the wall without a frame.
